When I think about how much the world has evolved since the internet went mainstream and has integrated into our society, I think how far we’ve come and at the same time, how far we still have to go. Even though technology advances us, it seems to also take us back a few steps or even in strides. Less and less people are writing or communicating via snail mail, even less are writing letters by hand and opting for E-mail or printing letters from their favorite word processing program. Probably half the reason why the United States Postal Service is losing money and closing many locations! Have we reached such a time where we now don’t think about the importance of sincerity, human touch, or even the small details such as personalized letters? And I don’t mean by just signing your name but believe it or not, many young children these days do not even know how to properly write in cursive let alone sign their own names! Most just ‘print’ their name out and even in ‘print’ their identity which could be identified through a simple cursive signature, is absent. Cursive is a dying art form, how could this be? What happened to our society?
Surely in a lot of ways, technology is suppose to help us be more productive but when it interferes with the fundamentals of life and education, where should we take a step back and pause for a bit to reflect? How do we stress an importance on what use to be important to what now is the norm of typing quick short hand text messages on mobile phones and handhelds? Receiving text messages such as “omg, idk, c u soon!” seems extreme to me, sometimes I don’t know why people even bother abbreviating anything when it takes the same amount of letters to make the ‘cooler’ variation of it! Or seeing similar shorthand text in e-mails and even using such words in typed papers for class assignments, it’s absurd! Typing on the computer should be a benefit to ones writing, especially with the advancement of auto-spell checker and the different grammar tools available. It’s very hard to ignore these simple fundamentals of reading and writing. As we go digital in many ways, even in art, the origins shouldn’t be left behind nor forgotten. Why else would we have ‘history’? Yes, we evolve but learning about why we do things or are able to do those things, shouldn’t be taken for granted. Some people never get the chance to learn to read or write let alone see, touch, or listen to an iPhone/iPod/Android/HTC device.
